Iget some archive file from ftp site, but there is many "*.ARJ" file.
Could some-one tell me, how to melt these file or play directly.
or show me where the tools are.
I'm novice about PC-DOS not only UltraSound system.

Is there a file which describes how an amateur can get started on doing
recording etc. For example, if you are not using Windows, what is the max.
amount of time you can record using the gravis supplied softward. It seems to
be a matter of seconds rather than minutes.
Secondly, is there a basic keyboard which, by using the midi connector, would
allow some recording, if necessary using windows.
Any suggestions for beginners would be appreciated.
Anyone who has any info could send to me at ua844@freenet.victoria.bc.ca
and I would be most appreciative.

Well, for one, you left off the info in your GUS. Virtual2.zip was still
buggy and neither it nor spiral.zip nor debute produced any sound for me
either. Get VIRTUAL4.ZIP off EPAS...
Since my GUS isn't at the standard values (it conflicts with my SB and my
Adaptec), I'd like to take this opportunity to ask that demo programmers
realise that NOT EVERYONE'S GUS IS AT THE STANDARD VALUES!! Use the
ULTRASND environment variable to get the info. After all, that's WHY its
there...

Subject: GUS and ATI VGAStereo FX problems
Message-ID: <93Aug9.161839edt.43229-2@undergrad.math.uwaterloo.ca>
Hi,
I have a GUS as well as an ATI VGAStereo FX card. Because my card is
(the ATI) a sound card as well as my video card, I can't take it out of
my system (as Gravis recommends having no SoundBlaster or compatible
cards in the system when the GUS is put in). However, I got around that
by setting up the IRQ settings properly as well as the DMA channels used
by the GUS for the soundblaster settings. This works well for games that
are not GUS compatible yet (and sound pretty horrible with SBOS and don't
work with the ail drivers - ie Xwing, Microprose Formula 1 Grand Prix).
I was happy enough when I got to keep both cards in the system and have
these games work (Xwing by setting BLASTER=whatever IRQ etc necessary), but
when I tried to play WOLFENSTEIN 3-D it wouldn't recognize the ATI card at
all. I tried using sbos as a last resort but that sounded horrible and
crashed many, many times.
So, I figured that it might have something to do with having my ATI set at
address 240 hex and GUS at 220 hex. I recall hearing that some games were
hard coded to look for the SoundBlaster at 220 (I'm not sure if Wolf3D is or
not though).
Finally, here's the problem : I decided to switch my ATI to address 220 and
my GUS to address 240. However, whenever I change the setting of the GUS to
anything but address 220, it never seems to initialize. Has anyone out there
seen something similar, or been able to set their GUS to anything other than
address 220 and have the GUS work?
Thanx for any help.
Steve

Just a note to let all you U.S. readers about the latest price for the
GUS listed in the Best Buy flyer. It is $126US. So if you have been
holding off because of price you might want to run on down and pick one
up. That may not be the lowest price that has been quoted, but it is
very good and Best Buy stores are in most parts of the U.S.

Subject: Re: MIDI files (Roberto Sierra's)

In yesterdays's Digest, mike@batpad.org wrote about problems playing
MIDI files by Roberto Sierra. Maybe someone out there knows what
setup these files need, otherwise...
As you say, fiddling with default.cfg, or setting up MIDI mapper should
be the way to get the original files to play correctly. Don't know
why the files won't play *at all* with Media player - something
about the MIDI file format I should think. Perhaps loading and
saving from a sequencer would re-format them.
Regards changing the actual MIDI file to native GUS, you need a
sequencer with some global editing facilities like 'change everything
on this channel to that channel'.
Some terminology -
*tracks* are a feature of MIDI sequencers and MIDI file format. They
divide up the music into convenient pieces but do not affect how
is plays. Often one track will use a single channel and a single
instrument, but it need not.
*channels* - MIDI has 16 of them. Each MIDI message includes the channel
it is intended for. Once an instrument is selected for a channel (program
change message) it persists for all notes on that channel until changed.
One channel is reserved for percussion - 10 on the GUS, but sometimes 16
for other things. On the percussion channel, what would normally be
the pitch of the note selects the instrument instead, since the
instruments do not have a pitch.
*patch* or *program* - an instrument sound, numbered 0-127 (or sometimes
1-128). Melodic ones selected by MIDI program change message, and
percussive ones by the pitch of the note (as above).
The problems to be addressed are (with MIDI mapper comments):
If percussion is not on channel 10, then change it so that it is. Swap it
with whatever was on 10 before (in MIDI mapper, this would be done in the
main 'setup' editing window).
If percussion is now playing the wrong instruments, then edit the 'pitch'
of all notes on the percussion channel to get the right ones (in MIDI
mapper, this would be done be setting up a 'keymap').
If melodic instruments are playing the wrong instruments, then edit all
'program change' commands to select the intended program (patch) (in MIDI
mspper, this would be done by setting up a 'patch map').
So altogether a non-trivial task if you were starting from first
principles. Maybe one of the setups already present in the midimap.cfg
does something appropriate - try looking what other setups there
are in there.

Message-ID: <9308091350.AA05949@us2rmc.bb.dec.com>
The thread about MIDI Mapper not doing patch loading reminded me of something
that I thought of several months ago, but never pursued.
Does anyone know what MIDI Mapper is? What I mean is, is it written as a
driver, a normal application, or is it something with intimate knowledge of
undocumented interfaces, i.e. part of the Windows kernel? The reason I ask is
that I think a very good thing to have would be a version of the MIDI mapper or
a similar thing which WOULD do patch loading for patches that pass through it.
The patch manager is nice, but not very helpful when you have no clue what
patches are being used by an application which does not use MIDI files. If no
one can convince AGravis to make the driver auto-load patches, at least it would
be nice to have a hunk of software to plunk down between an application and the
drivers to do the same. Anyone have a clue as to how difficult this might be?

Tried asking about this in comp.music, got no response, so thought I'd
try on here:
I would like to see the midi sample dump message format, so I can write some
thing that can get samples from samplers and put them on a pc.
Yes, I know the books in the FAQ have stuff like this in them, but they are
US titles and would probably take ages to order and be expensive & I already
have a couple of books on midi that mention most other things.
Also are there any sites that hold *files* of samples in this midi sample dump
format?
Thanks,

It's even worse than that: there are multiple samples along the velocity
(amplitude) axis as well. Real pianos change timbre significantly as the
keys are hit harder: just changing the volume doesn't cut it.

If you're using a non-velocity-sensitive keyboard (like the POS Casio I've
got...:-( ), it probably transmits all keys with a velocity value of 64.
Considering the non-linear GUS volume control, it means I have to turn the
amp up to about *12* just to hear it. What I've been doing is using the
internal voices of the Casio for monitoring while recording and then
twiddling the velocity numbers for the recorded track after the fact. I
don't know if any of the more upscale sequencers (WinCake etc) can do
this on the fly or not.

What you're talking about is a MIDI keyboard controller. Unfortunately,
all the ones I've seen are intended for pro usage and are NOT cheap.
Best bet alternative is one of the Yamaha or Casio keyboards intended
for home (toy? :-)) use: just be sure it has MIDI out and velocity-
sensitive keyboard. Check you friend and neighbors with kids: they may
have given one to their kids for Xmas and they've gottet tired of it
by now. (Do NOT get a used CZ-101 or CZ-3000: the older ones do not
have velocity-sensitive keyboards!)

idea here is to be able to use the ENORMOUS patch/sample libraries available

I think it defaults to 2 semitones, BUT the GM spec specifically calls out
'Pitch Bend Range' controller message as a required feature, so I think you
will have to change this on the fly.

I thought Type 2 was for multi-sequence files (e.g. drum pattern files);
Recording Session and Trax load these as Type 1 without any trouble.

Not just custom MAPPINGS, but (I think) custom INSTRUMENTS (patches) as
well...he talks about posting sysex files for people with similar H/W.
The main problem from OUR point of view is that these are NOT GM files
in any way, shape, or form. I've managed to 'repatch' some of them for
GUS usage and will upload later if I'm happy with the results :-).

Media Player has a (undocumented?) limit of 64K for a MIDI file; larger
ones just hang it, at least on my machine. I don't have these files on
the machine here at work, but they are major-league sequences: I'd be
very suprised if a lot of them didn't exceed 64K. Trax and Recording
Session handle them OK though.

Nope: use Recording Session or Sequencer of Your Choice (TM) to change
the patch assignments. Note that some of the tracks have instrument
changes embedded and will take a LOT of work to untangle.

Hi all. Just caught up on a weeks digests. I feel a bit out of dat, but some
coments on things...
Firstly, as to the suggestion of modifying the patches: fine, but note that
if anyone writes something specifically for the GUS (eg. me) I use the
standard patches as is. If you've modified yours then my files will sound
different on your machine. It is unlikely to sound better because
if it sounded funny in the first place I will have done something to it.
Then again, if you're using Sound Canvas sequenced files, then you may be
better off with modifications to try and match the Sound Canvas. The point
is that the sequencing makes much more difference to the `sound' than the
raw patches do.
Secondly, about the Grand Piano patch problem. I have no doubt that it is
possible to do a much better Grand Piano patch but it will be a lot bigger.
I would have though half a meg for a reasnable to good patch. I've had a
little play with picking off the TG-55 piano patch from my TG-55 module, but
since I'm using an EGA monitor while on holidays and Patch doesn't properly
support an EGA monitor I haven;'t got all that far. The problem isn't the
envelopes, it's having LONG attacks before the loop cuts in.
Another thing: whoever was complaining about cutting off cymbals: it's
fairly straightforward to modify the patch to create a cutting off cymbal.
Just use the sustain version of the envelope in Patch.exe. I've had to do it
to a few hi-hats and a triangle which I still haven't managed to upload
to epas successfully (sorry guys, my modem doesn't seem to work properly -
I'll work it out sooner or later).
One more thing: about what happens on startup - I think the Windows startup
routines are checking for whether files exist - I say this becasue they give
me error messages of missing or non-existent patches all the time since I'm
modifying ultrasnd.ini. The real question is why this can't be bypassed -
most people aren't changing ultrasnd.ini at all so why check every single
time.
And a quick note for Francois while I'm here: I'm not really in a
position to do much checking out of patches at the moment since my modem
is misbehaving and at 2400 baud it takes all day to download half a meg.
Still, I will get around to checking out those 808 drum patches sometime
and I'm sure they'll be much appreciated!
Chris.

I too grabbed a copy of these midi files and found that they were not
patch mapped to general midi. The easiest way to fix them is this:
Make sure your midi driver under windows allows lots of voices (ie
probably 32 for these files).
Load up Winjammer, load in one of the midi files. The midi files are
commented as to what instrument each track should be used.
Open up the back of the GUS 2.06 manual to the GM patch listing (or
grab a GM patch list from somewhere).
In the file I converted, There were dual channels of instruments (Say
Flute1 and Flute2) So for each channel, See what instrument winjammer
lists in the comment file, set the patch number to an appropriate GM
patch, and change the midi channel. I renumbered them all in sequence.
IE Flute1 and Flute2 use the same patch so I changed the midi channel
to 1. Viola1 and Viola2 use the same instrument, so I set them both to
channel 2.
It would be nice to give each channel its own midi value, BUT.. the file I did had 23
channels, and there are only 16 midi channels. NOTE: don't try to assign a musical
patch into channel 10, you'll get drum sounds instead..
Note also that there is a Timpani patch to use that does not belong on channel 10.
I can't remember if the files needed to be Vmapped, but I think they do. (Extremely busy
weekend, kind of fogged my brain..)
The one sample I did seemed pretty good, but a little fast. I may try to slow
it down a bit..

Actually, gus0034.zip contains the fixes to the 2.06 disks. The latest
SBOS would be found in gus0033.zip.

The GF1 was partly designed by Forte, so I would imagine that Forte
had a big hand in the GF2 as well. (I think the GF stands for Gravis
Forte.) Thus, the GFx series would likely only show up in Gravis'
products and not their competitors'. I don't expect to see a GF2-
equipped GUS in the near future.

The Aria chipset can apparently only do 12-bit recording.

A test drive. :) This card doesn't sound technically feasible,
especially all its compatibility modes.

The .mids are not making program change calls for each channel. When
playmidi doesn't find a program change for a channel, it uses the grand
piano patch for it. Media Player, OTOH, fails to load any patch for
a channel unless it has a program change message, so you won't hear
anything.

Use WinJammer to assign the appropriate instruments to the channels.
If the percussions don't use the GM key map, then it will be very
tedious to get them right.

Simply do not load SBOS before Windows or during a DOS session in Windows.
SBOS does not work with Windows at all.

Or, get a copy of Winjammer 2.24 which does support patch caching, it's on Epas!

You should use a MIDI file editor such as winjammer 2.24 to edit the
Program/patch (can't remember the terminology winjam uses) changes. Don't play
with your cfg or ini files.
Oh, and are these files available anywhere except alt.binaries.sounds.music ?

Excellent! True MT32 game compatibility is around the corner then.

Great , then I can sell my MPU401 to pay for Mega-em registration ;-). Seriously
though, I think $25 is quite good and no excuse not to register.

Ok, i finally put 808add1.arj on epas. The hihats should be correct now, same
thing for the congas and the claves. The cowbell instrument (the one with a
full keyboard range: cowbell.pat) is also corrected.
Note that all these patches include the name, so for example in patch manager
you can use the "use name in patches" instead of the generic GM names.
Now, in beta test is the TR-727 kit and the steeldrums (soft and hard). A few
analogs may go into beta tomorrow (if i get a few testers). The TR-909 is
well under way, along with the CR-78. The TR-626 is also near alpha testing
(testing by me :P ). I also received a few disk with TB-303 and TR-909 samples
that i will probably transform in patches (i received a box of 10 disks from
a nice netter "in appreciation of the effort". Dunno if you are on the list,
but thanks Will. The 303 sounds are cool... however it'll be hard to fit in the
64Kb limit... we'll see).
So to recap, i have what i need for:
TB-303 (bassline)
TR-626 (sampled percs)
TR-727 (latin percs)
TR-808 (dance, spacey percs)
TR-909 (hard, techno percs) (got some kick drums finally)
Now, i just <grin> need:
SH-101 (cheap analog synth)
MC-202 (micro composer - yes it does have sounds)
TR-505 (? percs)
TR-606 (sampled percs)
TR-707 (cheesy percs :P )
To complete the line :), so if you have samples or the real mccoy, send the
samples or a DAT of these to me and i'll make patches of these...
Last, i'll be uploading this week a "test kit" with .wav and .pat of:
-the touch tone beeps
-pink noise
-100Hz sine
-1000Hz sine
-4KHz sine
-10KHz sine
-20KHz sine
After that, what is almost finished will go under beta and after that uploaded.
Then, the next bunch of patches will probably go in september...
Ciao,

A long time ago, back when I had a Soundblaster, I managed to find a set of
drum .WAVs that were sampled at 44.1KHz (and I believe 16-bit). There were
about 40 .WAV files. I now have a GUS and ULTRA TRACKER that can use those
files... anybody recognize what I am talking about and where I can find them?
Or, for that matter, does anyone have any idea where I can FTP some 16-bit drum
samples?
